The NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety qualification is designed for anyone who has fire safety responsibilities in a small to medium sized organisation. It provides the knowledge and understanding, when combined with relevant experience, to carry out an effective fire risk assessment, as well as embed good practice in the workplace. This qualification will help you to:
Gain a solid technical foundation to build on through practical application and experience
Positively influence fire safety behaviours and improve fire safety culture
Learn fire safety techniques that are based on global best practice
Provide valuable in-house fire safety expertise for your workplace
Advance your career by gaining specialist fire safety knowledge
Avoid the damaging and sometimes catastrophic losses that result from fire
For this qualification you should plan your study around 28 taught hours and approximately 20 hours of private study and background reading. Please refer to the full NEBOSH Syllabus Guide for more details.
This qualification replaces the National and International Certificates in Fire Safety and Risk Management that was launched in 2006.
those responsible for fire safety in low to medium risk workplaces
Health and Safety managers
Facilities Managers
Health and safety representatives within businesses
It is recommended that delegates have a good understanding and experience of Health and Safely prior to attending the course. Please call us on 01603 677107 to discuss the course level and requirements prior to booking.
All unit examinations and the practical assessment must be taken / answered in English only. Therefore to participate in this course, delegates will be required to read, write, speak and understand English. For example, delegates should be able to read and understand conversational and business English.
NEBOSH recommends that delegates undertaking this qualification should reach a minimum standard of English equivalent to an International English Language Testing System score of 6.0 or higher in IELTS tests.
Benefits for your employer
In the UK, employers and owners of buildings have legal responsibilities to control the risk of fire, under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. A key part of this is having the knowledge available to conduct suitable and sufficient fire risk assessments.
As well as providing the underpinning knowledge required to conduct suitable and sufficient fire risk assessments, the NEBOSH Fire Certificate includes a practical element. This ensures that delegates have the knowledge to carry out, unaided, a fire risk assessment of a low to medium risk workplace and prepare a recommendations report for management.
Employing people who are NEBOSH qualified demonstrates a commitment to safety and risk management and provides assurance to others. It can even help you achieve recognised standards and win new business.
For more information on how NEBOSH qualifications can benefit your organisation, visit NEBOSH's Guidance for Employers page.
What will I learn?
The qualification covers the following units:
Unit FSC1: Fire safety
Managing fire safety
Principles of fire and explosion
Fuel, oxygen and ignition sources and control measures
Fire protection of buildings
Safety of people in the event of fire
Fire safety risk assessment
Unit FSC2: Fire risk assessment
The practical fire risk assessment is normally carried out at the delegate’s own workplace and involves prioritising risks, inspecting the workplace, recognising a range of common fire hazard, evaluating risks (taking account of current controls), recommending further control measures, planning actions.
The risk assessment will be discussed in detail during the course.
Unit FSC1: 22 hours tuition and 20 hours private study Total: 42 hours
Unit FSC2: 6 hours tuition and 8 hours private study Total: 14 hours
Your study therefore needs to be based around 28 taught hours and approximately 28 hours of private study.
How is it assessed?
Unit FSC1 is a taught unit and is assessed by an open book examination (OBE). The OBE can be completed at home or in another safe and suitable location where the delegate will be able to concentrate and not be disturbed or distracted. You will be presented with a scenario that describes a realistic workplace and situation. You will then be asked to carry out a series of tasks using evidence presented in the scenario as well as the underpinning of knowledge you have gained through your studies and revision.
You will have 24 hours to complete and submit your paper - though NEBOSH suggests that you should be able to complete it in 4-5 hours.
Unit FSC2 is assessed by a three-hour practical fire risk assessment carried out in the delegate's workplace. The fire risk assessment has been developed around fire risk assessment standards such as the Home Office fire guidance and PAS79-1:2020.
The time needed to complete the fire risk assessment is not restricted, NEBOSH do, however, recommend that you take around three hours to complete all four parts of the assessment. This should allow you to show your understanding of the assessment requirements and complete a good quality fire risk assessment.
The written practical assessment will need to be submitted to Jarrold Training within 10 working days (before or after) of sitting the FSC1 examination. The practical assessment is marked by an external examiner appointed by NEBOSH. These examiners are chosen for their experience and expertise to ensure that learners are assessed by the very best from our industry.
It is the delegate’s responsibility to submit their written assessment within the timescale, any assessments not returned by the deadline will result in the delegate failing this section of the course.
Prices include
Exam registrations for Units FSC1 and FSC2
Course materials
Study guides
Lunch and refreshments for all Norwich classroom courses
What accreditations will I gain?
On successful completion of units FSC1 and FCS2, the delegate will receive a NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety Qualification Parchment.
Delegates will need to pass both units within a five year period to achieve this qualification. The five years starts form the date that they pass their first successful unit (or "declaration date"). Any unit that is five or more years old will not count towards the qualification and will need to be retaken if they want to complete the qualification.
When all unit certificates have been awarded (ie, have achieved a Pass in units FSC1 and FSC2), the marks are added together and a final grade is awarded as follows:
Pass 45-64
Credit 65-74
Distinction 75+
The NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety has been accredited and credit rated by the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) Accreditation. It sits in the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) at SCQF Level 6 with 5 SCQF credit points.
