Course overview
Poor Critical Thinking = Poor Decisions = Costs, Losses and Poor Outcomes
Who to employ? Where to source new materials and assets? Which processes and strategies to implement? Practicing good Critical Thinking can assist with decision making in all these areas.
The great philosopher Bertrand Russel said, “most people would rather die than think, indeed they do.” We have probably all come across people we believe to be intelligence but who we observe making less than optimal decisions. In some cases this might be due to poor estimations about the probability of different outcomes but often, it is more to do with flaws in the reasoning process. In reality many of us have never been taught how to think and this is the purpose of Critical Thinking.
Critical Thinking is ‘thinking about thinking’ with the intension of assessing and evaluating our thinking so that we can improve it. Improving our thinking helps us to make better judgements about what to believe and do in all areas of life and specifically in relation to workplace matters. Critical Thinking helps us to identify and assess our own assumptions, biases and thinking fallacies and it helps us to better judge the credibility, reliability and quality of the evidence we are using to lead us to our conclusions. It helps us to detect any problematic patterns in our thought processes which may lead us to otherwise avoidable mistakes.
